Dig DAO (a.k.a. Japanese Digital Agency spin-off web3 Study Group DAO) : Our journey and the future
What happens when we apply the concepts of Web3 and DAO to society? Can we forge a smoother, more comfortable world to work and live in? Dig DAO is a spin-off project of the Japanese Digital Agency's Web3.0 Study Group DAO, a group of volunteers researching and studying DAO case studies and Web3-related technologies. The goals of Dig DAO align with those of the Web3.0 Study Group DAO.
The purpose of the Web3.0 Study Group DAO is to discuss, research, practice, and publicize the Web3.0 ecosystem and the environment for societal development.
Joi Ito, a member of both Dig DAO and the Japanese Digital Agency's Web 3.0 Study Group DAO, explains the significance of Dig DAO as follows:
"The purpose of Dig DAO is to research DAO using Web3 tools for purposes beyond mere profit-making. In the past 30 years of the Internet's history, technology steadily advanced despite fluctuating fashion, economics, and media trends. I would like to follow this consistent technological growth and focus on building relationships and infrastructure with my peers, especially during the so-called Web3/crypto 'winter'—periods when society isn't paying as much attention. These quiet times, spent engaging with peers in research, investigation, and discussion, can have a significant impact when we look back on it in hindsight.
Dig DAO is a group of friends interested in creating a decentralized, conscious world. We voluntarily research and disseminate technologies, organizational bodies, and rules that advocate adecentralized governance. What kind of future can a group of friends, create? We invite you to watch and and enjoy.
Dig DAO's activities:
The purpose of Dig DAO is to discuss, research, practice, and disseminate the ecosystem of Web 3.0, as well as the environment required for the healthy development of society, and specifically to:
Research Web3 DAO and propose new ways of working and living.
Research and develop technologies that form the basis for architectures that realize interoperability (DID, VC, etc.).
We also envision a group capable of applying the principles and guidelines of decentralization not just to individuals, but also to corporations and governments. To achieve this, we will study domestic and international DAO initiatives and collaborate with DAOs or teams already engaged in similar research.
Members:
Until the activities are clarified, the study will be conducted with a limited number of members. We plan to increase the number of participants in the future gradually, so please keep an eye on our future activities if you wish to join.

Naming process:
The original name of our organization was the “Web3 Study Group DAO” under the Japanese Digital Agency. However, our members collectively felt the name wasn't sexy enough. After several discussions, we agreed on the name Dig DAO. We’re excited to share the thought process that led us to this decision:
Tools used: miro, ChatGPT4
* Thought process
1) The first keyword that came up was "hub" / "junction", reflecting our intention to research how information from web3 and DAO can be utilized across various entities, such as individuals/companies/governments. @takeshi asked ChatGPT-4 to name candidates with the meaning of hub and junction, and we came up with a list of possible keywords. Among them, the word "Nexus" caught the team's attention.
2) Based on the ChatGPT-4 proposal, each team member proposed a name and wrote it down on a note in miro. Picked up a few interesting ones at this point.
* “Wagamama DAO” or “わがまま DAO”: ‘Wagamama’ translates to “selfish” in English. We chose to use this term, which is not commonly used within governmental organizations like the Japanese Digital Agency, to illustrate the individual and decentralized research interests of our members.
* "DAO ONSEN": Reflecting the unique culture of baths or 'onsen' in Japan. Unlike many other cultures, the Japanese tradition involves sharing hot water with family or the community. By incorporating this distinct cultural aspect into our DAO's name, we aim to express a world view where everyone warms up and creates together. @Daum
* "DOJO": Aiming to create a martial arts training place = dojo, digitally, where people train, practice, and foster a new spirit. @isbetty @joi
・ "w3rd4": Subsituting 'Web3 Research of Digital Agency' (WERDA) with memetic expression. This one aimed to create a name that embraces internet culture through alphanumeric substitution. @hida
* TownHall DAO": "Town Hall" is used in the naming to indicate the creation of a open platform where anyone can participate in a straightforward manner @mariroom
It's interesting to note that sometimes ideas can emerge off-site.
A week later, we revisited our Miro board. @takeshi suggested 'Digi DAO' in the Zoom chat. Considering the activity of the Digi Daigaku NFT project, and that this is a spin-off from the Digital Agency, we felt that using 'Digi-' would reflect the project's background. So, we began playing with the name in the Zoom chat, which was... Digi- 👉 Dig? 👉 Dig DAO!?!?! A quick chat chain started between Daum / mariroom, and everyone agreed that Dig DAO was a good idea. Thus, Dig DAO was born.
'Dig it': As we discuss, research, practice, and disseminate knowledge about the Web 3.0 ecosystem and the environment that needs nurturing, curiosity and inquisitiveness are key. The Dig DAO will start digging to research new governance mechanisms, foster community connections, and create new societal standards and ways of living. Please keep an eye on our future activities.
